In the Alpine Union School District, kindness is key! The district works hard to promote kind behavior in the student community to make the best environment conducive to learning. One of the ways that the Alpine Union School District promotes positive behavior in students is through Kindness weeks.
Kindness weeks are held roughly once a month with fun themes to engage kids. For each theme, there is a fun twist on what kids should wear for that week. A few themes from recent months include:
We Team Up for Kindness – Students wear their favorite sports or team jerseys to school to focus on coming together to be kind.
We are Crazy About Kindness – Students wear crazy socks to show how crazy they are about kindness.
We Don’t Hide Our Kindness – Students focus on showing kindness, not hiding it, by wearing camouflage.
Ride the Kind Wave – So everyone can remember to be kind, everyone dresses up in surf or beach shirts.
The focus on kindness in the Alpine School District has more benefits than just engaging kids. Through promoting kindness, the school also works to fight against bullying. Teaching children kindness can act as bullying prevention. Kindness encourages emotional intelligence in kids, a skill becoming increasingly important to consciously develop. Kids also gain multiple other benefits from acting kindly including greater self-esteem, reduced stress, and a greater sense of gratitude.
