Toronto – Insomnia is a prevalent condition that verges on the epidemic. However, surprisingly few people seek professional consultation for this condition. On the contrary, most people manage their insomnia using prescribed medications to their detriment. In fact, a recent study by Genevieve Belleville, a professor at Université Laval‘s School of Psychology, which analyzed twelve years of Statistics Canada data, reveals that taking medications to treat insomnia and anxiety increases mortality risk by 36%.

Canadians increase their risk of death because sleeping pills and anxiolytics affect reaction time, alertness and coordination and are thus more likely to fall or be involved in accidents. “They may also have an inhibiting effect on the respiratory system, which could aggravate certain breathing problems during sleep. These medications are also central nervous system inhibitors that may affect judgment and thus increase the risk of suicide”, says Shereen Dindar, National Post.

Genevieve Belleville adds, “These medications aren’t candy, and taking them is far from harmless”.

However, what non-pharmaceutical treatments are available for those suffering from insomnia?  Well, according to Veronica Colantonio, Co-Founder, Centre For Dynamic Healing, “There are many natural, homeopathic and biomagnetic treatments for Insomnia.”

Colantonio  adds, “We aim not only to treat sleeplessness, but to address its underlying cause and individual susceptibility of the patient.”

“We encourage patients to visit our Toronto clinic to get the relief they need from sleepness nights.”
