ALEH FOUNDATION HONORS DR. VINCENT CALAMIA, WITH THE MEDICAL LEADERSHIP AWARD AT THE 2014 GALA AWARDS DINNER

This year the Aleh Foundation http://www.alehfoundationusa.org/index.html will honor distinguished civic and medical leaders impacting areas of medicine and mental health, education and arts at the upcoming Dinner to be held on May 21, 2014 at the Museum of Jewish Heritage in NYC. We are pleased to announce that this year’s Medical Leadership Award will be presented to Dr. Vincent Calamia for his contributions to mankind.

Dr. Vincent Calamia is the Medical Director of Eger Health Care & Rehabilitation Center that is among the largest New York nursing homes.   The Health care and Rehab Center is  part of Eger Lutheran Homes and Services. Started in 1916 as a home for Norwegian Lutherans in Brooklyn, N.Y., it now operates a 370-bed residential health care facility. The center offers various on-site rehabilitative services, including physical, occupational, speech and recreational therapies, and rehabilitation medicine. It also provides skilled nursing and subacute care services that include intravenous and respiratory therapies, peritoneal dialysis, specialized wound care and total prenatal nutrition. Eger serves the continuing health care needs of senior community members by offering a range of services, including social adult day care and hospice care, and it operates an on-site 75-bed assisted living program facility. Located in Staten Island, N.Y., this beautiful 97 year old facility standing on 22 acres is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and caters to all faiths.

Dr. Calamia is a board-certified endocrinologist, internist and geriatric medicine specialist who has been a consultant for Ambulatory Care Development at Richmond University Medical Center on Staten Island http://www.rumcsi.org/Main/Home.aspx . He is also Medical Director of the Hamilton Park Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Brooklyn. >From 2006 to 2010, he was Chief Executive Officer of Victory Memorial Hospital in Brooklyn, where he developed and negotiated budgets, managed hospital safety and quality programs and oversaw hospital regulatory compliance, among other duties. Prior to that, he was Chief Operating Officer of Victory Memorial Hospital, where he worked aggressively to expand successful geriatric and primary care initiatives that significantly increased admissions and reduced a $6 million deficit. Dr. Calamia also was Vice President of Strategic Planning for Victory Memorial from 2003 through 2006. Earlier in his career, Dr. Calamia was Chief of Geriatrics from 1991 through 2002 at Staten Island University Hospital, where he created the Geriatric Division at the 650-bed teaching facility  http://www.siuh.edu/ . Since 1989, he has been President and CEO of the University Physicians Group, one of the largest physician groups in New York City, employing more than 60 physicians in multiple locations with revenues exceeding $30 million.

Dr. Calamia was president of the Richmond County Medical Society from 2009 to 2010 and has been a board member of the Medical Society of the State of New York’s Steering Committee on Legislation and Physician Advocacy since 2005, among other elected and appointed board positions http://www.rcms.org/ . He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the State University of New York at Stony Brook and his MD from the University of Miami School of Medicine.
