Nursing Students Offer Massage Therapy

In an effort to raise money to improve health in the Philippines, Deakin University students will be providing massage therapy.

At tonight’s summer night market at Lake Pertobe, Deakin Warrnambool nursing students from Deakin University in Warrnambool, Australia will operate a fund-raising massage stall to help the people of the Philippines. Local people can do well and feel good by supporting the effort. Three qualified remedial massage therapists will offer their services to help raise funds for health projects and equipment the students will provide during their upcoming study trip to the Philippines.

A dollar a minute will be the charge for massage therapy and the stalls will be open from 3pm today at Lake Pertobe. Donations of toothbrushes are also requested by the nursing students, which will be distributed to children in the Philippines as part of their health education initiative. As part of their studies, a team of 30 nursing and midwifery students from Deakin’s campuses throughout Victoria (including six local students) will spend 19 days overseas in the Philippines.

Peta Kampman, the Warrnambool group leader said that later this month her group would leave for the Philippines to work in health units in the Dumaguete rural area and the city of Angeles, north of Manila. They will carry out health education activities with the children on such matters as dental hygiene and provide health assessments on the local people.

Moreover, the money raised will help provide rehabilitation equipment for hospitals in the Philippines as well as glucometers and accessories for blood sugar monitoring. Ms Kampman said the money raised would also support a community garden at one of the schools where the students will be working. Donors should provide their email addresses to receive reports about the work the students are doing.
