Fayetteville, GA – March 16, 2015 – Open Rivers Pictures (ORP), a full service film and television production company, have launched Open Rivers Film Academy, a school offering career-focused education training in Georgia’s growing film and television industry. The new academy is offering its fourth installment of Production Assistant Workshops and expands workshop offerings.
“We started our first workshop in December 2014 and are pleased with the response from the students and productions that are hiring them,” stated Tammy Williams, founder and CEO of Open Rivers Pictures. “The reason we started this workshop was due to our production needs as it is very hard finding qualified production assistants. When we started receiving calls from other production companies searching for good production assistants, we decided to start a production assistant-training program,” continued Williams.
A Production Assistant (P.A.) is the entry-level position for the TV and film production industry – almost everyone starts out as a P.A. After working as a P.A. for three to four years to gain experience and connections, you can move up into more skilled positions in specific crew departments. One can expect long hours, physical labor, outdoor-work in all kinds of weather, while earning $100.00 to $200.00 per day.
“Taking the P.A. certification course definitely gave me the advantage over the average person entering into this field without any experience, it basically made me more marketable,” stated Joseph Parker, a recent graduate of Open Rivers Film Academy (ORPFA) Production Assistant Workshop. “Open Rivers Pictures is one of the few, if not only, companies right now offering this certification course in Atlanta.”
Jephry Milloy, a recent graduate of ORPFA PA Workshop, stated, “Yes the workshop was definitely helpful and it did prepare me. Some of the exercises we did in class, like learning to use the ‘walkies’ used on film sets, wrapping cables, and working with Kraft services all came into play on the production.“ He continued, “From what we learned and talked about in class, I was confident going into the production and was ready for anything that would be thrown my way.”
Georgia’s film and TV industries generated $5.1 billion in economic impact during the last fiscal year, up from $3.3 billion in fiscal 2013. According to the Motion Picture Association of America, the 158 feature film and television productions shot in Georgia, in fiscal 2014, generated more than 77,900 jobs, including nearly 23,500 workers directly employed by the two industries.
ORPFA has expanded their workshops to include, How To Play Digital And Win! Creating A Successful Web-Series with television and digital executives Alvin V. Williams and FAITH BASED SCREENWRITERS WORKSHOP with Hollywood screenwriter, Stan Foster.
Open Rivers Pictures is located in the Pinewood Atlanta Production Centre where the Production Assistant Workshop is being offered.
