Switzerland is one of the leaders in the global antibiotics trade. However, in 2014, Switzerland exported 289.6 tonnes of antibiotics totaling 1.4 billion USD, a full 23% under the previous year. Its primary trading partner was Germany, where it supplied 46.3% of its total antibiotics exports in value terms, accounting for 77.7% of Germany’s total imports. 

From 2007 to 2014, Switzerland was a net exporter of antibiotics. Over the period under review, exports consistently exceeded imports in value terms. However, in physical terms, imports exceeded exports. 

China and Italy were also among the leading global suppliers of antibiotics in 2014. However, the fastest growing exporters from 2007 to 2014 were China (+6.3% per year) and India (+7.6% per year). With this, these countries were able to strengthen their positions in the global export structure. 

In 2014, Switzerland’s top 5 trading partners were Germany, Italy, France, China and Iran, with a combined share 96.1% of Switzerland’s exports. The share of Spain increased (+2.1 percentage points), while the share of France illustrated negative dynamics (-0.8 percentage points).
