A charitable organization with local roots, Lake Wylie Children’s Charity has long sought to raise funding and support for area children suffering from life-threatening diseases. In doing so, the charity makes full use of local resources, including beautiful Lake Wylie itself. On August 15, supporters of the charity took to the waters for a day of fun, food, and music—all of it for a good cause. This year’s Parrot Poker Fun Run on Lake Wylie ultimately raised some $6,310 for deserving children and their families.
“Low rainfall has left Lake Wylie looking a little pitiful this summer, but that didn’t stop us from having a great time and showing our support for these kids,” comments Jennifer Joye, Executive Director of the charity.
At this most recent fundraising event, participants traversed the lake, seeking out pre-determined “checkpoints” and being dealt a new playing card at each one. After each participant had received a full hand of cards, a winner was declared. The event also boasted food, donated from local providers, and even music from local 103.7 Radio DJ “Big Sexy.”
The mission of Lake Wylie Children’s Charity is to provide for the financial needs of families whose children have been diagnosed with serious illnesses; in many cases, these families have lost their income as parents spend their days providing medical care and support.
“On behalf of the full Lake Wylie Children’s Charity Board, I want to offer my sincere thanks to all of the volunteers and to all of the participants who showed up to spend the day with us, to show some love for the children we are able to support year round,” comments Haven Presley, Board of Directors Chair.
Meanwhile, on Sunday, October 4, the charity will host its annual free concert, rain or shine, which draws thousands to the lake every year. For this year’s event, the charity has chosen to support Jaxon Clark, a four-year-old with MPS II/Hunter’s Syndrome, and Kelsie Funderburk, a 14-year-old with a brain tumor.
Lake Wylie Children’s Charity is supported by individual donors as well as corporate sponsors, including T-Bone’s on the Lake, New River Community Church, and more.
