The Presidential Yacht USS Williamsburg is rusting in Italy. Help purchase, restore, & bring this ship back to the United States

PORTLAND, Maine – October 6, 2015 – The USS Williamsburg, once known as the “Sea-going White House,” is now rusting in an Italian seaport destined for the scrap heap.

Built in 1930 at Bath Iron Works for a private owner, she was brought into service as a gunboat in World War II. President Truman then used her as his Presidential Yacht. Truman hosted Winston Churchill on the Williamsburg and made many of the most significant decisions of his presidency aboard her. In the 1950s, she was decommissioned from the U.S. Navy and changed hands many times over the last six decades.

Sometime this fall the Italian government will have her cut up, pulled from the water and melted down. Unless, of course, you help save her.

The Williamsburg is waiting to be restored to her former glory. A group of former White House staff have formed Save the Williamsburg as a non-profit corporation to buy the historical vessel, restore her, and give her back to the American people to be used by future presidents.

Save the Williamsburg has launched what would be the largest Kickstarter campaign ever to raise the funds necessary to completely restore her. Complete renderings of what a refitted Williamsburg will look like are available on the Save the Williamsburg website

The goal of this project is to raise $40,000,000 by October 27, 2015. The funds raised will purchase this vessel, restore it, and bring it back to the United States.

To help bring this ship back to America, please visit the Kickstarter campaign or click here. Perks will be delivered between October 2015 and May 2018.

Please keep in mind this is an “all-or-nothing” deal, which means if the campaign does not reach the funding goal then the project cannot move forward. So know that any amount given can make a difference. This is an incredible opportunity to be a part of a special campaign! Help The Williamsburg reach the goal by sharing this on Facebook, Twitter, and other social networks. The more people know about this, the more support the campaign will receive.
