The addict who is working on achieving sobriety will go through many different stages during the recovery process.

There is a history of people being treated by addiction recovery programs that view their disease as a personal failing. The lack of will power that some people cite as the reason for an addict’s continued addiction is interpreted as a way to judge and denigrate the addict. This viewpoint fails to really address the treatment needs of the addiction. These days, these attitudes about addiction still persist in the general populace. However, the medical professionals who evaluate and treat addiction now partner tightly with mental health professionals and experienced addiction treatment professionals. The team approach, with multiple, empirical and objective professionals, helps the patient to get a better quality of care, and allows the right specialist to be engaged with a proper healing process at the right time.

The addict who is working on achieving sobriety will go through many different stages during the recovery process. During each phase of the addiction treatment, the medical professionals take the lead. A good alcohol treatment or drug addiction recovery program will help the patient through the somewhat uncomfortable and frightening process of removing drugs and alcohol from their life. The process takes as much time as it takes, depending somewhat on the substance or substances that have been abused, the addict’s commitment to becoming clean, and the abilities of the staff at the treatment center.

The medical professionals work hand in hand with the mental health treatment team. This group will benefit from the information gained from the medical team, and will design a therapeutic approach to the patient’s recovery. Pulling together multiple therapists who all have experience and training in handling addiction, the mental health team will work in partnership with the patient themselves to determine the course of treatment.

At a residential and in-network treatment facility for addiction, therapeutic approaches like cognitive behavioral therapy can be very helpful.  The patient can be assisted in gaining mastery over thought processes and gain an understanding of how to modulate behavior. The addiction choices that the patient felt compelled to make due to duress and trial in their life can be handled differently. This begins to happen when the skills to make life decisions which are healthy and effective are taught to the patient by mental health pros.
