It is a way of living that brings together all aspects of one’s life – spirit, body, and mind or, more specifically, one’s physiological, mental and spiritual condition.
But what exactly does the word “spirituality” mean in recovery? Does “spirituality” make recovery a religious practice?
What Does ‘Spirituality’ Mean?
Spirituality is a word for happenings that we do not quite understand or cannot measure through observation or otherwise define through material methods. Spirituality is something that can be felt, like the love from a mother. It cannot be touched like a material object can, and it brings us closer to feeling at one with the world.
Spirituality is Not the Same as Religion
Spirituality and religion are not the same. Consider this: Science is to nature what religion is to spirituality. Basically, science is the human observation and study of nature, which existed before humans. Likewise, religion is observing and studying the spirit, which existed before humans. Spirituality is often involved with religion, but not always. Religion is typically an established set of beliefs and rituals that could or could not have a spiritual basis.
When the term spirituality is used in recovery, it is not inferring something religious, it is simply referring to something cannot always be defined, measured or explained.
Here is a quote from the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous: “The terms ‘spiritual experience’ and ‘spiritual awakening’ are used may time in this book which, upon careful reading, shows that the personality change sufficient to bring about recovery from alcoholism has manifested itself among us in many different forms.”
Spirituality should not frighten addicts entering recovery; it should be something that is embraced. Having a spiritual connection with a higher power is a very beneficial tool to possess. It is something that can be taken anywhere in life. When one is feeling angry in the face of adversity, one should stop for a moment and pray to their higher power for the strength to react appropriately to such adversity.
Those who can get past the thought of spirituality being just the same of religion have a powerful method of keeping themselves at center with the world around them. The ability to be spiritual is a gift; it can take an addict who is struggling to survive, and turn them into a recovering addict who is beginning to thrive.
