San Clemente, California – November 9, 2015 – Living in a healthy, supportive environment can be beneficial when it comes to managing drug and alcohol use. While genetics do play a role in addiction, environment is an important factor as well. Not only are people influenced by places, they are influenced by people and situations.Chapters Capistrano has released a statement to the press regarding the need for strong support networks and structured routines in addiction recovery and prevention.
“An important part of the recovery process is building a strong support system,” says Susie Shea, co-owner of the drug and alcohol rehab center in Orange County. “When you transition back home, you want to have people you can call on when things get tough and to keep you motivated. In families, open communication and ongoing support can help keep kids away from experimenting and reduce their risk of addiction.”
Another element of recovery is avoiding boredom. Clients are encouraged to try new activities and create a routine to stay busy. Having too much downtime and isolation from others can lead to temptation and in turn drug or alcohol use, notes Shea. With a more active schedule that involves support group meetings, exercise, outings with friends, and time with family, clients can keep their focus on creating a healthier lifestyle that is drug-free. Their mind stays more engaged and their concentration is on more productive activities.
Psychologist Bruce Alexander conducted a study on rats back in the 1970s. He evaluated the role of environment on their use of drugs. In traditional studies, the rats would continue drinking heroin-laced water over plain water until it became fatal. However, Alexander found that when there were more stimulating objects in their cages such as food, toys, and other rats, they didn’t overdose or even become addicted. He used what he learned about the rats and their behavior to apply it humans as well.
According to Alexander, “The best way to address addiction is not with jail time or isolating addicted people from others in society. Instead, we should give them support, a healthy environment to thrive in and activities that involve substantial social interaction – all of which will help them on the road to recovery and eliminate the desire to return to dangerous drug use.”
“We take a similar approach in addiction treatment,” asserts Shea. “We strive to equip clients with the skills, tools, and resources necessary to help them rebuild their lives and make healthier choices. Through a variety of methodologies and activities, they are able to transition back into society and create positive routines and interactions that support their recovery.”
In addition, incorporating these same strategies into people’s lives can help to prevent substance misuse and reduce risk of addiction, says Shea. This approach can be used for both prevention and treatment. Chapters Capistrano develops individualized treatment plans based on each client’s needs and situation in order to help them overcome addiction and progress in their recovery.
