With a huge surge in exports in 2014, China continued its dominance in the global smart card trade. In 2014, China exported 6.1 thousand tonnes of cards incorporating an electronic integrated circuit totaling 1.3 billion USD, 32% over the previous year. Its primary trading partner was the U.S., where it supplied 8.6% of its total smart cards exports in value terms, accounting for 21.2% of U.S. total imports.
From 2007 to 2014, China was a net exporter of cards with an electronic integrated circuit. In this period, exports consistently exceeded imports in value terms.
France and Germany were among the other main global suppliers of smart cards in 2014. However, the fastest growing exporter from 2007 to 2014 was China (+9.2% per year). By nature of this sustained growth, China was able to significantly strengthen its leading position in the global export structure.
In 2014, China’s top 5 trading partners were the U.S., India, Germany, the Republic of Korea and Japan, with a combined 26.4% share of China’s exports. The share of India increased modestly (+3.3 percentage points), while the share of Germany fell sharply (-16.3 percentage points).
