That’s exactly the premise of the serialized novella “Beyond Belief” by Stella Wright.
It’s 2040. A totalitarian Islamic regime controls great chunks of Europe. The story follows a young English women Sara Lewis: for whom life promises little. Dull, deadening boredom. Terror around every comer. With her own personal secrets – she has more to fear from the Islamic State than most. Sara’s a lesbian.
New possibilities awaken when she meets the mysterious individual known only as Null. He offers the hope of transformation and the unheard of for a woman – the chance to read…
Wright describes the book as “alternative futurism” but points out the story is very much based in reality. “ISIS released a map in September 2015 showing just how they intend to divvy up Europe once they occupy it. The seeds have been sown.”
What’s life like in this dystopian world? “Children play in the trash of the street. Collectors come sometimes, but there is too much trash to ever really pick all of it up. Everything ends up here. In the streets. Even the bodies. The headless, handless, corpses or the crucified on telegraph poles. Sometimes the bodies sit there with the trash for too long, till it’s hard to tell if they were black, white, man or woman, adult or child. Just more trash that no one wants to take away.”
“The book’s a cautionary tale and I believe a relevant one,” Wright says. “Religion on the whole, and Islam in particular is holding us back from progressing as a species. These are ideas that belong in the Stone Age. We have a duty to future generations to leave them a free world where basic rights such as freedom of speech, freedom of sexual orientation and equality of the sexes are universal. The lack of debate over the merit of religion in the 21st century means we are still fighting battles which should have been won hundreds of years ago.”
Beyond Belief is a novella published in serial form in 3 bi-monthly parts and is available in paperback and ebook.
