Break down larger goals into smaller, more manageable milestones. As you watch your progress grow, this can keep you motivated. The last thing you want to do is set the bar too high and then feel depressed if you fall short. Resolutions aren’t set in stone – it’s okay if they change along with you.”
Shea also reminds people that they don’t have to achieve their goals by the end of the month. Resolutions are meant to be for the whole year, so have patience and allow things to build with time. Instead of diving into a routine of going to the gym five days a week or cutting out all sweets, start off slowly. Hit the gym twice a week and increase from there. Start reducing the amount of sweets eaten and replace them with more fresh fruits and vegetables instead.
“Recovery is about more than just saying no to drugs and alcohol,” says Shea. “It’s about making changes in all areas of your life including being more physically active, taking steps to manage stress, getting plenty of sleep, and setting healthier routines. Make your resolutions meaningful to you and complementary to your recovery.”
The Chicago Tribune also notes that “Motivation naturally wanes, but framing days other than New Year’s as opportunities for do-overs provides many chances for people to seek positive self-improvements throughout the year.”
