Hollywood & Narcissistic Personality Disorder: An Entertainment Industry Meetup Presented by Nancy Fulton

January 8, 2016, Santa Monica, CA, United States– Darlene Lancer, JD, LMFT (darlenelancer.com) author of “Dealing with a Narcissist: 8 Steps to Raise Self-Esteem and Set Boundaries with Difficult People” will be speaking at the Promenade Playhouse in Santa Monica on January 30 @10am about Narcissistic Personality Disorder. This informational event is presented by writer/producer Nancy Fulton and those interested in attending can RSVP at NoBetterFriend.com.

Nancy Fulton says, “This is a way for entertainment industry professionals to learn more about a disorder they are very likely to encounter as they move from project to project, set to set, in Hollywood. It’s also useful for creative pros who want to accurately write about or portray those with the disease.”

Narcissistic Personality Disorder & the Entertainment Industry

The word “narcissist” is flung around frequently in Hollywood.  People incorrectly use it to describe someone who habitually arrives late for meetings or talks just a little too long at parties.

But Narcissistic Personality Disorder is a severe mental illness and many people who have the disease gravitate to, and thrive in, the Entertainment industry where being very charming and very manipulative can pay off personally, professionally, and financially.

Writers, actors, directors, (and particularly) producers working in the industry need to know how to identify Narcissists and benefit from understanding the interpersonal and intrapsychic dynamics at play when narcissists are incredibly demanding, lack empathy, blame others for their failings, fly into furious rages, or go from trusted co-worker to dreadful enemy in a matter of hours.

The more projects an entertainment industry professional works on, the more likely they are to run into someone with this mental illness.

Learning what Narcissistic Personality Disorder is, how it affects the people that have it and those who know them, and how to handle people who have the illness (when they can’t be avoided) is a critical skill for those who wish to thrive in the entertainment industry.

This event will also be very valuable to writers, screenwriters, and actors working in the industry who are frequently called upon to create or portray characters that suffer from NPD.

Michael Corleone in the Godfather, Miranda Priestly in the Devil Wore Prada, Patrick Bateman in American Psycho, are all examples of characters who show classic symptoms of NPD.  Understanding what makes those characters tick, how they were formed, and how they evolve over time, is critical to being able to capture them well.

In this session you will learn:

  • What Narcissistic Personality Disorder Is
  • Why Some Narcissists Become Successful
  • How to Recognize the Symptoms of NPD
  • Why Narcissists are Difficult or Impossible to Treat
  • The Patterns that Evolve in Relationships with Narcissists
  • Pitfalls of Relating to Those Who Suffer from NPD
  • What Co-Dependency Is & How Narcissists Prey on Co-dependents
  • What Drives Co-Dependents to Become Attached to Narcissists
  • How Therapists Treat Victims of Narcissists
