The Santorini Animal Welfare Association in Greece has launched an IndieGoGo campaign to raise funds to continue its work in protecting and saving animals of all types. SAWA is a non-governmental and non-profit group that was founded in 1993 by animal lovers who wanted to take care of all types of animals from abandoned donkeys to stray dogs and cats. The group has become an advocate for animal rights and operates several programs that protect the animals on the island.
The Stray Dog Management Program cooperates with local veterinarians and the government to locate stray dogs, neuter or spay them, vaccinate and de-worm them and the release them. Those animals that are unfit for street life are taken to a shelter and cared for until volunteers can find them a good home locally or abroad with help from their sister organization in Germany. Volunteers also provide food and water for street animals.
The group also funds low-cost spaying and neutering for cats and adopts them out to good homes whenever possible. They also run an Equine Management Program in cooperation with the City of Thira and the Donkey Sanctuary Organization of Great Britain. Donkeys and mules are cared for and given vet treatment for their teeth, hooves and other needs.
Finally, the group offers public education about the importance of spaying and neutering dogs and cats and performs outreach to find willing fosters and homes for animals. Unfortunately, the group is in danger of being unable to continue its work due to lack of funding.
The IndieGoGo campaign, located at https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/santorini-animal-welfare-association-sawa#/, offers contribution levels of €5, €10, and €100.
