10 DAYS IN A MADHOUSE Passes On the 88th Academy Awards and Aims For The 89th Oscars

“10 Days In A Madhouse have decided not to compete in the 88th Academy Awards and instead will submit for consideration for the 89th Academy Awards held February 2017.”
Director Timothy Hines and the filmmakers behind 10 Days In A Madhouse have decided not to compete in the 88th Academy Awards and instead will submit for the 89th Academy Awards held February 2017.

10 Days In A Madhouse is the powerful feminist film critics are raving about. The movie is based on the true story of famed journalist Nellie Bly, who in 1887 displayed a level of courage that is truly astounding. In order to report on the conditions of the notorious Blackwell’s Island insane asylum for women, 23 year old Nellie Bly feigned insanity and got herself committed as a patient.

10 Days In A Madhouse stars newcomer Caroline Barry, who, critics agree, gives a magnificent performance as the ever optimistic Nellie Bly, alongside veteran actors Christopher Lambert and Kelly Le Brock.

Christopher Lambert, who is well-known for his performances in classic science fiction fantasy films such as Mortal Kombat and Highlander, stars as Dr. Dent, head of the mental institution. With his role in 10 Days In A Madhouse as well as the upcoming Coen Brothers feature Hail, Caesar!, Lambert is really showing off a different side of his acting ability this year. Critics who have screened 10 Days In A Madhouse at Cannes Film Festival and Bentonville Film Festival are calling his performance in 10 Days one of the best, most dynamic of his career. The film is also Kelly Le Brock’s (Weird Science, Woman In Red) first role in years. She gives a memorable appearance as one of the cruel nurses.

10 Days In A Madhouse has been gaining glowing reviews. Bust Magazine says 10 Days “demands to be watched.” The New York Times calls the film “stunning” and “dramatic”. Ms. Magazine raved about 10 Days, calling it a “must-see”. Ms. Magazine goes on to say, “Nellie Bly’s heroism and courage truly come to life on the screen, thanks to the work of talented up-and-coming actor Caroline Barry. Barry is instantly magnetic as Bly, and it’s hard not to root for and fall in love with her character as the story progresses.” Caroline Barry was chosen out of 8,000 talented actresses to play the role of Nellie Bly, and her performance is certainly worthy of an Academy Award nomination and win.

Alexandra Callas, daughter of the most famous Russian artist of the 20th century Lev Kerbal, has also been steadily gaining praise for her role as Nurse Grupe. She is expected to garner a nomination in the Best Supporting Actress category.

Director Timothy Hines has been asked in interviews his plan to win an Academy Award. “We felt that our movie was a late entry in one of the heaviest seasons of theatrical releases. More than twice the usual amount of movies have been submitted for the 88th Awards. In addition, we didn’t have time to do a proper tour of festivals and academy screenings. With such a heavy market and such little time, we didn’t think we could fairly compete.” Producer Susan Goforth concurs, “In talking with the Academy we discovered  that we have the opportunity to compete in the 89th Awards.

We played the film for many key Hollywood insiders, publicists and executives from Universal pictures, Fox and Paramount and there was a consensus that we had a shot at winning an Oscar, but not with such a short timeline. There is just not enough time to be seen by all the academy members. By the rules, we can compete in the 89th awards, so that’s our plan. We now have an entire year to promote the film for the consideration of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.”
