What started out as a fun way to party suddenly becomes a very serious game of life. The progression of the disease is so intense and controlling that you may not even realize you have it. The lifestyle that you once were accustomed to is now just a shadow in the background of lost memories, eventually being consumed by a vicious hungry disorder called addiction.
The will to live descends as a direct result of being lost. The demeaning lifestyle that is required in order to maintain an addiction drives the idea of death closer to reality. The pattern of finding, using, and finding more to use is a downward spiral. There are moments when you feel that all that is left of your existence is to move through the motions of trying to stay well by keeping enough of the substances within arms length. When trying to wean yourself off of drugs, or replacing one drug for another fails, the feeling of hopelessness and shame wash over you like a tidal wave. Drowning in the sea of chemically induced highs, with no foreseeable way out, the only possible way to escape seems to be to retreat from life altogether.
Failure to abstain from whatever substance one may be consuming is not a reason to take go further down the road of despair it actually can be used as a time to make a decision. The world that was most familiar to you at a time may be a bleak memory of what once was; however, it is possible to recapture the beauty of the life that you once lived. Though it may feel like wishful thinking to ever have a life again that is free from the degradation that is inevitably inflicted on you through addiction, with some willpower and help from a power greater than yourself, you can harness the disease that is suffocating you and begin to breath again. Remember you truly haven’t hurt someone if you change the only way to everlasting hurt individuals is to prove that you have zero desire to change and get help.
When a higher power does not seem like an attractive solution due to a resentment against religion and God altogether, rest assured that your belief system does not have to be a faith based program of any sort. Go to a darkened area of the city at night where you can see the stars and quietly sit back and look into the sky and or stare at the moon and pray to them for the willpower to overcome your addiction. Prayer is like a powerful mantra; when you consistently say the most powerful words coming from the heart they begin to manifest and become a part of you, and ultimately become a reality.
