Fifty three Alaskans out of every 100 voted to legalize the possession, cultivation, and retail sales of marijuana.
Unfortunately, this has not dampened drug overdose statistics in Alaska. With drug overdose already overtaking vehicular accidents as the leading cause of injuries. In fact, Alaska is number 17 in the country when it comes to drug overdose related deaths at 15.3 deaths related to drug overdose for every 1,000 deaths of all types. While accounting only 1.5 percent of the total deaths in Alaska, drug overdose deaths will continue to rise unless more concrete measures are taken by the state’s many top drug treatment centers.
With the legalization of marijuana, Alaskans are quite optimistic about their chances of addressing the drug scourge. However, a more pressing concern is the rise of drug overdose deaths. It is for this reason that Alaska’s drug rehab programs are shifting their focus on the management of drug overdose cases.
Drug overdose can be fatal if not treated or managed promptly.
This is more readily apparent among teenagers and young adults who take prescription drugs wantonly. They simply do not understand that these drugs are particularly dangerous especially when they are tampered with. Tampering has been shown to be the single most important reason why Alaska’s drug rehabilitation facilities are seeing more individuals with prescription drug abuse problems. Tampering occurs when the prescription drugs are taken not in their intended route. For example, instead of taking a prescription narcotic analgesic by mouth, some crush the drugs and are inhaled. This route facilitates the faster absorption and distribution of the drug throughout the body, more importantly the brain. This is one of the reasons why individuals who use these highly controlled substances get the effects they need while at the same time increasing their risks for the development of life-threatening effects such as respiratory depression and arrhythmias.
An addiction treatment center’s job now is to make sure that they are properly equipped with the latest resources to make sure that prescription drug overdose effects are properly and timely managed. Otherwise, Alaska’s growing number of drug overdose related deaths can only increase.
Many of Alaska’s addiction center establishments are also increasing their knowledge on the proper and more effective management of such concerns. Their medical and health care personnel are getting re-trained as well as re-certified for the many competencies that are expected of them. Additionally, they are now placing more emphasis on the education of the community by working closely with drug rehabilitation and treatment social support groups and other members of the community. In some cases, they also accept volunteers, especially from among their alumni, to spread the word about the need for more responsible prescription drug use.
The message these top drug addiction treatment centers want to convey is that prescription drugs should always be used only for the purpose they were intended to be used.
