EMV compliance was mandated in the United States just this last October.  At that time all business were asked to upgrade their merchant processing terminals to EMV compliant terminals.  “Dipping your card was to become the standard for all businesses,” says Nancy Clinton of National Card Solutions.  “EMV compliant terminals have a slot at the bottom,” she explains, “and the merchant is asked to take a compliant card and put it in the corresponding slot, or dip the card.”  But as Clinton notes, “Education for employees is lacking,” and most small businesses are still swiping instead of dipping.

It is clear that the education for the face to face employee who runs the registers and meets the customers is falling behind for many businesses.  Employees not properly trained in the use of the EMV compliant terminal, potentially could cost a small business thousands of dollars in fraud costs by swiping instead of dipping.

“All small business that have compliant terminals need to educate their employees on the benefits of using the EMV compliant slots for all CC transactions.” Clinton says, “Dipping and not swiping must become the norm for all business in today’s society.”
