“I prefer to use new metal. Although I usually distress it, it still has its glow. I create bumps and folds as areas for sanding and revealing layers of colorful paint and glowing metal.”
The Saguaro, located in central Palm Springs, has announced that it will feature area artists Paula Gibbs and Mandy Main in an exhibition that will open on March 2, and run through the end of March. The featured artists are members of the Palm Springs Art Museum Artists Council and were selected for this honor by the Saguaro. Now in its third year of hosting Artist Council exhibits, the Saguaro features new works from two artists every month in a location adjacent to the hotel lobby.

March 01, 2016 – Palm Springs, CA – Paula Gibbs, a Palm Springs, CA abstract artist, has been selected as a featured artist in an Saguaro Hotel exhibition that will open on March 2, and run through the end of March. Paula Gibbs is a member of the Palm Springs Art Museum Artists Council and was selected for this honor by the Saguaro Hotel.

“The Artists Council has 400+ members. As a fairly new artist I was not expecting to be selected for this honor,” explains Paula Gibbs. “Then to get a show during the peak season month of March was incredible!”

Paula creates her unique art using metal, which she distresses, paints and sands, then mounts on wood panels, to create unique works of abstract art. “I have always been attracted to old metal. It is such a sturdy foundation on which this grungy patina of time and weather is created,” says Ms. Gibbs.

In her art she prefers using new, metal that she can choose to distress or not. Describing her process, Ms. Gibbs explains, “I prefer to use new metal. Although I usually distress it, it still has its glow. I create bumps and folds as areas for sanding and revealing layers of colorful paint and glowing metal.” She adds, “I always have the metal at least peeking or glowing through somewhere, as I like to remind the viewer to look beyond the paint to the unique surface below.”

To launch Paula Gibbs’ artist exhibition, the Saguaro Hotel will host an artists’ reception on Wednesday, March 2, from 6-8 p.m., in the hotel’s lobby. This reception is free and open to the public. All of Paula Gibbs’ displayed works will be offered for sale, and a portion of the proceeds from each sale will be donated by the Saguaro to the Palm Springs Art Museum. The Saguaro is located at 1800 E. Palm Canyon Drive at the intersection of East Palm Canyon and Sunrise.
