A budding filmmaker and creative writer from East London, Damien Nembhard recently launched a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter for his community short film project “Only Wolves”. The film tells a gripping story of a young man forced to face his demons in order to save what matters most. The campaign seeks to raise funds to cover production and equipment costs and the Maroon Films team are hoping for a funding boost to spark their project to life. The campaign has set a funding goal of at least £13,500 to be raised by Friday, April 1, 2016 and offers various pledge options to suit different preferences.
The “Only Wolves” project aims to provide life-changing opportunities for underprivileged young people in North East London, and in particular, those living within the London Borough of Waltham Forest. Waltham Forest is home to high unemployment, poverty and gangs which leave many vulnerable youths deprived and disadvantaged. Once fully funded, the community production will offer employment and work placements to young people from all walks of life in a bid to tackle these issues.
Shone Romulus, who featured in the critically acclaimed “Top Boy” has been cast as the “Only Wolves” lead character Daniel Joseph. Daniel, a 27-year-old Londoner with dreams of becoming rich, ends up making a wrong choice which has grave repercussions. The film’s writer and director Damien Nembhard explained that the story’s aim “is to demonstrate the multiple challenges and complex issues that face young people from inner city communities. Emasculation and love are the central themes of ‘Only Wolves’ but issues of bullying, hopelessness, violence, family and religion also play key parts in the story.” Nembhard further added that the “stylish and explosive” film will run to 25 minutes. “There are no heroes, villains, winners, losers, crooks or coppers – in this world there are only wolves.”
As part of the “Only Wolves” campaign package a variety of different rewards and perks are being offered to prize the generosity of those who support the project through their monetary contributions.
