Statistics show that 2-3 percent of Mississippi residents are suffering from drug addiction and an average of 5 percent suffer from alcohol addiction. Drug and Alcohol addiction in Mississippi is leading down a fearful path.
There is much confusion as to what constitutes acute detox programs when compared to sub-acute detox programs.

A short glance at several literature and you can see that the two are technically the same in principle – both requires the elimination of the addicting substance from the body in preparation for therapeutic modalities. However, there is a very distinct difference between acute and sub-acute detox programs. And when it comes to acute detox Mississippi programs, it does pay to really understand this difference when it comes to detoxification.

An acute detox program is primarily intended for moderate to severe drug abuse cases where the likelihood of life-threatening withdrawal symptoms and signs is simply too great to be set aside. Because of the urgent nature of the ill effects of drugs, detoxification must be started immediately in order to stabilize the individual’s condition first before any succeeding evaluations and treatments are initiated. If the acute detox program is not immediately started, irreversible brain damage can occur because of the severity of grand mal seizures associated with severe drug addiction withdrawal manifestations.

In grand mal seizures, the brain’s electrical activity goes highly erratic to produce spams and jerking movements. What is not seen by the naked eye is the similar effects of these neuro-electrical misfiring on the muscles of the heart. Additionally, the seizure activity substantially deprives the brain of much-needed oxygen which can lead to potentially disastrous consequences. In most cases, if the drug effects are not addressed immediately, there is a very strong likelihood that the individual may lose his life. It is for this reason that acute detox programs are performed – to first save life before any other treatments or procedures can be initiated.

In a sub-acute detox program, the health problems are not as severe or life-threatening compared to those in the acute clinical type. So, the individual undergoing a sub-acute detox program can follow the normal course of drug treatment and rehabilitation where the individual is first evaluated before undergoing detoxification and stabilization. Towards the end, the individual is prepared for the various psychological and behavioral therapies that have been known the world over as the hallmark of drug addiction treatment and rehabilitation programs. This is not to say that the acute detox program does not have the additional components of those found in sub-acute programs. The only difference is in the sequencing of the phases where detoxification and stabilization comes first before a thorough evaluation.

It is therefore very important for medical personnel managing the acute detox program to be very knowledgeable and highly skilled in the overall management of the acute detox experience. This is very important because of the life-threatening conditions and the seriousness of the individual’s case that are often seen in individuals with severe drug addiction problems. More often than not, these individuals have grown so dependent on illicit drugs that removing them will be life-threatening in itself.

Acute detox programs are excellent for people who may have had grown so dependent on illicit drugs.
