Staying physically active can do more than just support better physical health – it may also promote better mental health as well, and be an integral part in addiction recovery. A study from UCLA has found that exercise may help reduce compulsions in those addicted to methamphetamines. Luxury drug and alcohol rehab center Chapters Capistrano has released a statement to the press regarding the benefits of exercise in addition to treatment and recovery.
“For years research has shown that addiction changes how the brain functions and processes information,” says Mike Shea, co-owner of the California rehab center. “Exercise increases dopamine production and secretion; this can cause a natural high and feeling of euphoria without drug use. For those in recovery, this may support efforts to remain substance-free.”
The article notes that “when dopamine is released it produces an euphoric feeling, making individuals more inclined to repeat whatever behavior produced the effect. Physical activity is – hypothetically – one of these behaviors.” Although meth use is as well, because it also affects neurotransmitters in the brain and creates a feeling of euphoria, ideally clients would replace this negative behavior with exercise which is a more positive one.
Exercise alone is not enough though, says Shea. It should be integrated into a comprehensive treatment program which includes therapy, education, proper nutrition, and a variety of other activities. But exercise can be an integral part of recovery. Edyth London, a member of UCLA’s David Geffen School of Medicine, who has been studying the meth-exercise connection, notes, “I think a regular fitness program combined with some other type of behavioral therapy would be very helpful.”
“Physical activity can also be a great way to reduce stress, strengthen the body, create routine, decrease pain, and explore new interests,” says Shea. “All of these things may help prevent relapse and support clients in establishing, and maintaining, a healthier lifestyle. Customized treatment plans that address each client’s individual needs are beneficial because they allow clients to discover what works best for their situation. Some may find certain kinds of exercise or physical activity more motivating and helpful than others.”
At Chapters Capistrano, exercise is incorporated into individualized treatment plans along with other approaches to help clients reduce cravings and the risk of relapse. “Every client’s path to recovery is slightly different, but having a variety of options can allow them to find what is most effective in their journey,” adds Shea.
