Pediatric Ophthalmology education and training in North Carolina just received a tremendous boost. $1 million donation will benefit children with vision issues.

Hattiesburg, MS – April 8, 2016 – Pediatric Ophthalmology education and training in North Carolina just received a tremendous boost. Southern Eye Center’s Dr. Kiper Nelson, along with his wife Laura Lee Nelson, recently made a generous donation to Wake Forest Eye Center at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

The $1 million donation will endow a professorship in Pediatric Ophthalmology, with Dr. Grey Weaver receiving the inaugural professorship. “This donation will allow Wake Forest to continue to attract top-notch surgeons like Dr. Weaver to the program,” said Dr. Nelson. “He helped train me and played such an integral role in my development as a surgeon. I am so happy to have the opportunity to honor the energy and time Dr. Weaver and the Wake Forest Eye Center faculty invest in ophthalmology students.” Dr. Nelson completed his residency training in ophthalmology at Wake Forest School of Medicine and has tremendous respect and gratitude for the program.

“It is so important to have great pediatric ophthalmologists available to care for children’s eye health,” said Dr. Nelson. “It can be challenging to make pediatric ophthalmology attractive for a surgeon, and it is my hope that this endowment will help with that. My wife and I have a genuine concern for children and are delighted to make a donation that benefits a cause near and dear to our hearts.”

The endowment will be formally accepted by Dr. Weaver Friday, April 8 at the Wake Forest Eye Center’s Annual Alumni Dinner to be held at the Old Town Club in Winston-Salem. “This endowed professorship lays the foundation for the future of Pediatric Ophthalmology at Wake Forest Eye Center,” said Dr. Weaver. “Myself and whoever is in the position to receive it in the future will have the opportunity to commit ourselves fully to the care of pediatric ophthalmology patients and to research in the field. As a department, we are extremely grateful for this gift.”
