Keeping a clean office is a key component of both productivity and profitability. Research shows that keeping a tidy work environment doesn’t only keep employees more healthy. It also makes them more productive.

A survey by the Staples Corporation found that 94-percent of workers polled reported feeling more productive in a clean workspace. Another 77 percent said they produce work of a higher caliber in a clean and sanitary environment.

“This study shows just how important it is for businesses of all sizes to maintain a professionally-cleaned office,” says Cory Waltemath, owner of Desert Oasis Commercial Cleaning in Phoenix, Arizona. “It’s about more than just having a clean office.”

Waltemath says he’s noticed another trend among business owners; moving away from traditional cleaning supplies in favor of green cleaning equipment.

“My company uses green cleaning supplies exclusively,” Waltemath says. “Not only does this lower our company’s impact on the environment, but it yields great results for our clients.”

Waltemath says offices tend to have a high number of workers who experience allergies or sensitivity to harsh cleaning components. He says the use of green cleaning materials greatly reduces the discomfort for employees who experience allergies.

Another study by Kimberly-Clark showed that employee education programs about proper workplace hygiene also helps to improve productivity and reduce the amount of sick time workers take every year. These programs can help reduce an employee’s chance of catching a virus at work by as much as 80%.

“Aside from hiring an experienced and professional cleaning company, workplaces should also take steps to educate their employees,” Waltemath says. “Simply keeping some hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes around can make a huge difference.
