Chapters Capistrano Stresses Importance of Recognizing Signs of Alcoholism

In recognition of Alcohol Awareness Month, Chapters Capistrano sheds light on signs of alcoholism and ways to seek help.

Alcohol is one of the most commonly used addictive substances, and many people overlook the risks since it is legal for those ages 21 and older. But just because it is a legal substance does not mean that it doesn’t come without its share of dangers. Alcoholism is a serious problem but one that can be treated. Drug and alcohol treatment center Chapters Capistrano has released a statement to the press regarding the importance of recognizing the signs of alcoholism and seeking treatment.

“Drinking has become a social norm and almost expected,” says Mike Shea, co-owner of the California rehab center. “What many people fail to realize, however, is that building up a tolerance to alcohol is not a good thing. It may actually put you at a greater risk for alcoholism since it takes larger amounts to feel the same effects others feel with lesser amounts. You may be unaware of how much you are actually drinking and the damage it is doing.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “79,000 deaths per year are attributed to excessive alcohol use.”  In addition, studies have found that in the United States approximately 17.6 million people struggle with alcohol abuse or dependence. Recognizing the signs and symptoms of alcohol use disorders can help people to get the treatment they need for recovery and better health. Alcohol use takes a toll on both physical and mental health.

“When you’re aware of what to look for, you can be more proactive,” says Shea. “You take more notice to the fact that a loved one isn’t just having one drink with dinner – it’s turning into several more, or they’ve started drinking earlier in the day. Or maybe you see how it’s affecting their health, their job, and their relationships. Then you can step up and encourage them to get the help they need and create a more supportive environment for recovery.”

Some signs of alcoholism include developing a high tolerance and being unable to control the amount one drinks, becoming more secretive about drinking or downplaying the frequency and amount, and becoming more aggressive and anxious when it comes to drinking. Alcohol can also interfere with sleeping patterns, appetite, concentration, and coordination.

“When a person develops alcoholism, they often prioritize their drinking over other things,” says Shea. “It’s not that they don’t care about their family, friends, or job, but the alcohol has changed the way their brain functions. You may notice that their work performance is suffering, they drink at unusual or inappropriate times or events, and they start neglecting their usual responsibilities. Their focus becomes consumed by alcohol whether they want to realize it or not.”

Holding an intervention guided by an addiction specialist can allow families to more effectively express their concerns and encourage a loved one to enter a rehab program. A facility like Chapters Capistrano can assist clients in safely overcoming alcohol withdrawal through supervised detox, addressing underlying problems contributing to their drinking, and developing effective strategies to reduce risk of relapse. Clients can regain control of their lives and start a new chapter in sobriety.
