Some people are quite confused when addiction detox and treatment professionals tell them about sub-acute and acute detox programs.

Some would even get more confused when medically managed and residential managed detox programs are added into the fray. Now include an inpatient detox and an outpatient detox into the mix and everybody gets confused. A program for sub-acute detox in New Jersey is best understood when you look at what detoxification really is.

Detoxification is the crucial first step in any substance addiction treatment program. The addicting substance must be first completely removed from the body before any addiction treatments can begin. The detoxification process can take anywhere from a few days up to a few weeks depending on the type of the addicting substance as well as the presence or absence of any underlying medical or behavioral problem. Typically, addicting substances that have severe effects on the body will require detoxification in a hospital inpatient facility where the individual’s condition can be actively and continuously monitored by medical and healthcare professionals. Because of the relatively higher risk of potentially life threatening withdrawal symptoms in these cases, medical supervision and management is required.

Now, if the individual is showing moderate to severe withdrawal symptoms or is exhibiting a variety of physiologic manifestations related to his addiction, it is called an acute condition. A sub-acute detox program therefore is one that manages milder forms of physiologic manifestations. To put it simply, an individual seeking sub-acute detox treatment will often have a long-standing addiction problem but not severe enough to warrant medical management or supervision. In these situations, personnel and staff of a residential inpatient detox facility is often enough to perform and monitor the detox treatment.

Sub-acute detox programs typically deal with individuals who present with mild to moderate withdrawal symptoms that can be effectively managed by a well-trained and duly-certified detox professional in a residential inpatient setting. It is called sub-acute because the symptoms or manifestations do not warrant round-the-clock medical monitoring or management. Supportive care is still mandatory, however, since the body will often have nutritional deficiencies. In a sub-acute detox program, the individual is allowed to undergo the detoxification process on his own terms but often with the support of detox team members. Standard detox medication treatment protocols are typically not needed because of the milder forms of clinical manifestations. Thus, the individual is often expected to progress into the succeeding phases of addiction treatment and rehabilitation a lot faster than individuals requiring acute detox processes.

Upon completion of the sub-acute detox program, the individual can then progress into the main addiction treatment. Since the addiction is considered mild to moderate, it is often possible to get an outpatient program especially if this is the individual’s first time to get treated. If this is not the first time or that the individual’s addiction is already long-standing, albeit mild to moderate in severity, then an inpatient residential program is recommended.

Sub-acute detox programs are for individuals with minor to moderate addictions requiring sufficient supportive care. This paves the way for treatment programs to be initiated.
