EVOH stands for ethylene vinyl alcohol. It is a prescribed copolymer of vinyl alcohol and ethylene. As the former monomer is primarily present as its tautomer acetaldehyde, the copolymer is made by polymerizing vinyl acetate & ethylene to generate ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer, with hydrolysis following it.
EVOH copolymer is defined the mole percent ethylene content. Higher content grades of ethylene have lesser temperatures for extrusion. Conversely, lower content grades of ethylene have higher barrier features. EVOH generally finds use as an oxygen barrier for food packaging. It is superior to other plastics with regards to maintaining the flavors in and air out.
Apart from the above properties, this plastic resin is resistant to solvents, oils, & weather and highly transparent. It is also moldable, flexible, printable, and eco-friendly. These multiple advantages bode well for the EVOH market and drive its sales. However, EVOH is difficult to make and costlier than other food packaging products.

This is probably the only drawback which prevents the market from progressing further. In place of producing a whole package out of ethylene vinyl alcohol, manufacturers maintain low costs by laminating or coextruding EVOH as a thin film amidst foils, cardboards, & other plastics. Yet another vital market propeller includes EVOH adoption as a hydrocarbon barrier in pipes and plastic fuel tanks.
The number of EVOH production companies is quite less. This is attributed to EVOH plants needing higher investments for their construction. Also, a lot of intricacy is involved in the manufacture of food grade products. Ethylene vinyl alcohol is also used in the medical industry. It finds applications in liquid embolic systems for interventional radiology.
The EVOH market is fragmented into four different regions. These encompass Europe, North America, Asia Pacific, and rest of the world. EVOH’s various benefits help it garner enough attention and sales worldwide. The global market is oligopolistic by nature. Rising costs of feedstock generated from crude oil & natural gas raw materials may negatively affect EVOH users.
The same could also lower their profits. All these factors are predicted to decrease ethylene vinyl alcohol demand from higher historical rates.
