In 2007, a team from Massachusetts-based VERC Car Rental teamed up with ExtensionEngine, a software development company, to create a solution to recover profit loss caused by vehicle damage costs. The rise of the smartphone helped provide the development the team needed. What started out as a simple idea to use cameras and web technology to make up a digital vehicle inspection report is now a damage assessment app available worldwide.
“The technology choices were evolving alongside our ideas,” explains Ofri Markus, director of product management and operations for ExtensionEngine. “Once smartphones became affordable and accessible, the pieces began to fall into place.”
This new damage assessment software works by allowing rental agents to take a photo of the rental car from six different angles, as well as a photo of the fuel gage and odometer. Then, when the vehicle is returned, new photos are taken. The app will then flag any new damage, which the renter is responsible for. The photos are stored using the Amazon cloud, which removes the cost of maintaining a physical server.
“Since DiD has been in place, VERC reports that its CDW/LDW sales are up, reversing a downward trend,” said Kimberly Burke, author of “A New Way to Identify Damage” from Auto Rental News.
VERC Car Rental has been using this vehicle condition report software with great success, reporting that their fuel reimbursement has been improving significantly. VERC Car Rental unveiled their DamageID software at the Car Rental Show in April of 2014. This app is now available to car rental companies across the nation.
