SOUTH BEND, IN – 02 May, 2016 – Sarina Adeline, a sophomore at Culver Academy, debuted her first novel The Devil in Amen’s Corner on April 30. She aims to bring new ideas to the Young Adult genre by reintroducing historical fiction and thriller novels into the mainstream media, especially among her peers. “There’s a side of literature we often don’t see in YA fiction, and I want to help form that bridge,” she explains.
Sarina began writing her novel in 2013, but it underwent eight redrafts and countless revisions. After two years of querying literary agents and being rejected, she found herself stumped. “Almost all the agents that I contacted were deterred by my age or said that my genre just doesn’t sell,” Sarina says. Refusing to give up on her dream, she decided to take a risk by contacting a professional editor, Michael Garrett. Although slightly hesitant at first, he agreed to work with her, and Sarina got her first real taste of the publication business. After another several months of revision, Sarina sought an Indie publisher to take on her project.
Wanting to support young talent, Sarina has involved kids her age in her project as much as possible. She worked with other students throughout the editing process, discussing revision skills, character development, and voice. She also commissioned Sophie Bysiek, a sophomore at Mishawaka High School, to design her cover. Sophie is a promising young artist who was recognized at the Scholastic Art Awards earlier this year. Sarina is planning to coordinate events in the Michiana area to support other aspiring writers and artists.
Sarina’s book is available for purchase, and she is excited to continue her journey as a young author.
