Reducing stigma and isolation around mental health issues

Vejerde la Frontera, Spain – May 4, 2016 – May is Mental Health Awareness Month in the US, a movement which aims to offer support to the 1 in 10 Americans (according to Healthline) who suffer from depression, mostly without seeking care. Depression is actually a global crisis with approximately 121 million sufferersworldwide, especially since that figure is rising alarmingly year on year and depression has a negative impact on other health factors such as obesity, heart disease and stroke.

Louis McIntosh (the writer) and Kathryn Hockey (the illustrator) have drawn on their own experiences of depression to produce a powerful and beautifully illustrated poem about depression and hope called “The Black Dawg”which they plan to publish as apicture book for adults.

They aim to help reduce the stigma around depression, let fellow sufferers know they are not alone and explain to the friends and families of sufferers what it feels like to be depressed. The poem offers solutions too as it documents the process of emerging from depression and finishes on an optimistic note.

To raise funds to cover costs of design, printing, publishing, marketing and distributing “The Black Dawg” McIntosh and Hockey launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise €12,000 by May 12, 2016.

“The Black Dawg” pledges to date stand at over €5,500 but this is an “all-or-nothing” deal. If the campaign does not reach the funding goal, then the project cannot move forward. Any amount given will make a difference so please don’t miss out on this incredible opportunity to be a part of a special project and raise awareness for mental health issues! Click here to make a donation.

Once the campaign is successfully funded, a significant number of the books will be donated to prisons, schools, libraries, mental health charities and other mental health service providers. Backers can choose from a number of attractive rewards which will be delivered by September 2016.

You can also help the campaign reach its goal by sharing this on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media networks. The more people who know about this, the more support the campaign will receive and the more help can be offered to people suffering from depression.
