The Business Innovators Magazine radio show covers stories from the most innovative leaders in business, such as Mark Cuban, Jeff Bezos and Dave Ramsey. This interview with Francesca Kuglen was published on May 16, 2016

In this powerful interview, listeners will learn how much — or how little — patents can protect businesses.

Francesca Kuglen started her first company fresh out of college with $250. Eleven years later, she sold it to Newell-Rubbermaid. She has since gone on to become an ultra-successful entrepreneur. Francesca has numerous patents, inventions and trade secrets that have been licensed to large corporations such as Conair, Goody Products and Scunci. She has made millions of dollars selling her products worldwide. Francesca speaks with authority, passion and a contagious sense of humor.

Francesca says that her experience with patents has opened her eyes to their reality. She says that patents are a necessary evil and she still files for them, but she doesn’t hang her hat on them. Francesca explains, “Patents are not a small business owner’s friend. It isn’t because patents are malicious; it’s simply because it’s a bureaucracy, and it is not intended to protect small businesses. I have multiple patents. And I can guarantee that I have made more money on copyright and trademark infringement than I have ever made on patent infringement. It costs about $15,000 now to file a patent in the United States. In patents, if somebody breaks down your door and steals your patent and starts knocking you off, there is no entity that’s going to step up for you. You have to pay an attorney to do it,” Kuglen concluded.

Francesca is now a partner at HairZing, a company that makes hair accessories. Learn more at www.HairZing.com
