Local Business Mavericks, is a compilation of one on one interviews with some of the top entrepreneurs in their industry. Mrs. Willis and her fellow co-authors each reveal strategies for helping their clients overcome the toughest obstacles and barriers to their success and demonstrate their clear expertise in their respective fields.
The latest edition of Local Business Mavericks was released on Amazon in April, 2016 and quickly shot up the charts to #1 in the “Business Life” and the “Free Enterprise” categories.
In her chapter of the business leaders book, Mrs. Willis discusses oncology massage and her work with a cancer treatment center in the Phoenix, Arizona area. She covers the challenges and misconceptions many cancer patients encounter when considering massage therapy, and how oncology massage requires specialized certification and education.
She also conveys the differences between oncology massage and a typical sports massage or therapeutic massage; pointing out that often times cancer treatment can change a patient’s skin in a way that requires extra care when providing massage therapy.
Understanding the differences in oncology massage and having the proper education and credentials has opened new doors of opportunity for Mrs. Willis and Blue Skye’s Massage Clinic. “I enjoy the results my oncology patients receive once they receive their massage. They leave the massage relaxed and rejuvenated, looking forward to their next session because they say it helps them feel better for days at a time instead of feeling weak, sick and nauseous,” Mrs. Willis commented.
“The benefits of massage to someone going through cancer treatment like chemotherapy and radiation extend much farther than just stress relief. Many times our patients feel better just from being touched in a nurturing way. I’ve had cancer patients tell me that they feel well enough after the massage to do things they weren’t able to do before our session,” she said. “Oncology massage brings back energy, can increase appetite and decrease nausea. It can also improve the mental well being of the patient,” she added.
Her experience is echoed by a statement from MD Anderson Cancer Centers, “review of the scientific literature indicates oncology massage helps improve quality of life. Benefits include improved relaxation, sleep, and immune function as well as relieving anxiety, pain, fatigue and nausea.” Clearly, oncology massage has it’s place in the overall treatment and well-being of people battling cancer.
