Dr. Gerstein studied for his medical degree at the Albany Medical College in Albany, New York. Following his graduation in 1978, he served his internal medicine residency and medical oncology and hematology fellowship at the North Shore University Hospital and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Hospital. While working towards his doctorate of medicine, Dr. Gerstein was honored with the Mosby Award for Outstanding Research in the field of virology. He received board certification in internal medicine and medical oncology from the American Board of Internal Medicine. He maintains professional society membership with the Carcinoid Cancer Foundation and is senior attending physician with the Long Island Jewish Hospital in New Hyde Park, New York, and North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, New York. Dr. Gerstein is also the medical advisor to the Neuroendocrine Cancer Awareness Network and has held positions at the NYU School of Medicine and the Cornell School of Medicine. Throughout his career, he has been a principle investigator in more than 20 research projects in the sphere of medical oncology. Dr. Gerstein feels that he has enjoyed a successful career due to his passion for the field and personal attention to patients. When he is not working, he likes to read, travel, play tennis, and spend time with family and friends.
