PLB or Personal Locator Beacons are the world’s first smart watches that can be used to send signals in any emergency situations. The device is launched with a goal of raising $25000 and offers a chance to the backers to pre-book the product at an early bird price.
The cospas-Sarsat 406-MHz beacon is a radio transmitter that the user can activate in a life threatening or emergency situation to receive help from the government authorities. The international Cospas-Sarsat program is an intergovernmental cooperative of 43 countries that maintains a network of satellites and the ground facilities that can receive distress signals from 406-MHz beacons. The system passes on the alerts to the concerned authorities in more than 200 countries.
Once the satellite has received a transmission, they will find the location of the user and route that information to the AFRCC which will begin the search and rescue operations. Using the PLB watch, the user can easily deliver their coordinates without the need to wait for the satellites to determine their position.
To start using the PLB watch, the watch owners can register their device with NOAA so that they can link the user’s important information a Unique Identifying Number (UIN), which is a 15-character code. During an alert, this UIN is transmitted to the Cospas-Sarsat satellite using the electronic bursts. The UIN, consisting of personal information of the user such as name, address, phone and any medical conditions help the rescue team to take immediate action.
The PLB watch will feature the dual frequency Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) and the Bluetooth low energy (BLE) beacons. The user can activate the watch to transmit signals by pressing a button 3 times. The watch can send an SOS SMS to an emergency contact such as 911 or any other as per the location of the user. Even if the watch does not find cell phone signals, the user can transmit the signal at 406 MHz and 121.5 MHz with the GPS coordinates and UIN.
The backers can pre-order the watch at a limited time early bird price of $79 on https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/the-world-s-first-smart-watch-for-emergency/
