While cognitive behavioral therapies remain the core treatment philosophy of many Louisiana drug rehab centers, there are those that provide other forms of therapies such as outdoor and experiential therapies. These are not actually unheard of; they are simply not discussed often enough. But they do provide excellent outcomes for individuals wanting to lead a life that is stress-free, relaxed, and free from the thought of having to resort to addicting substances.
Studies have shown that stress is a major factor in the use of illicit drugs. This is particularly true among individuals who may have very limited knowledge of how to effectively cope with stress. Some individuals who get so stressed out from school their respective social relationships, and from the demands of work as well as other facets of life, may resort to using drugs because of the perceived benefits of not being able to feel or think about their stresses even for a brief period of time. Many addicting substances rewire the brain’s ability to perceive sensations such that the feelings of inadequacy or dissatisfaction are inherently masked by the use of drugs. The individual perceives this as one of the benefits of drugs such that he goes on to abuse them, leading to addiction.
This is the basis for the use of experiential therapies by drug rehab centers as an adjunct to cognitive behavioral therapies. Cognitive restructuring is still needed to help the individual realize that taking drugs is not the only answer to managing one’s stresses in life. The individual is also assisted in the formation of healthier and more adaptive thought patterns that will become the basis of an equally healthier and more adaptive behavior. However, counseling the individual can only do so much. He needs to experience it firsthand. For example, if the therapist suggested that one good way to manage stress is by engaging in activities that will take the mind off the stressful thought, the individual will only appreciate this if he himself experiences it. Like they say, seeing is believing. Or more aptly, experiencing is believing.
This is why drug rehab centers that provide experiential therapies have a much better chance of helping individuals get through their addiction problems compared to those centers that rely only on cognitive therapies. Individuals need to experience the effects of these therapies first-hand before they can adopt them and integrate into their lives.
A good example of experiential therapy is equine therapy where the individual is given the task of caring for a horse. He learns that by caring for this animal he also learns to appreciate his own strengths and weaknesses. It empowers him to better understand that he is more than capable of addressing his own problems. Other experiential therapies that have been proven to be particularly useful include music therapy, expressive arts therapy, adventure therapy, recreation therapy, psychodrama, and even wilderness therapy.
Experiential therapies provide a much better approach to addiction treatment and rehabilitation than mere talk therapy. Drug rehab centers that provide such services are thus, better able to help the individual recover from his addiction.
