Marshall University Professor Emeritus, and former Chairman of the Political Science department, Dr. Simon D. Perry, launches his third book “The Declaration of Independence, God and Evolution.” Given the current political climate, this book will create a polarizing controversy in our country, especially in the Bible Belt.
“The relevance of this book is timely, due to the presidential election, and the politicians injecting God and religion in every speech declaring that God is in the forefront of all their decisions. This is not new.
God has been a part of American politics since the Declaration of Independence was written by Thomas Jefferson and that is why it is used as a backdrop in my discussion of politics, philosophy, religion and science,” said Dr. Perry.
Dr. Perry questions whether Jefferson was motivated by God and if there is a role for religion in our government. Is God real or a fantasy? Is the Good Book really good? Why has man turned to God to achieve eternal life? Does the mythicism of creation prevail over evolution? Is man indoctrinated at an early age to accept God unconditionally? Dr. Perry spent five years researching this book and it relies heavily on the great scholars of religion, science and politics. This book lays bare our cognitive distortions of who we are and where we came from.
Simon D. Perry, received his A.B. in Political Science at Berea College, Berea, KY. He received his M.A. in Political Science at University of Tennessee, Knoxville, TN and his PhD. in Political Science at Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI where he received the prestigious Leonard D. White Award, presented by the American Political Science Association for the most outstanding dissertation in the United States.
His first two books, “Morality, Self‐Interest and the Cities” and “Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson: By Their Deeds You Shall Know Them” were both published by the Marshall University John Drinko Academy. Dr. Perry taught at Marshall University for 48 years, making his tenure the longest in the history of the school. The university created the Simon D. Perry Center for Constitutional Democracy in his honor.
