Millions of lives get wrecked because of the psychological, social, and emotional effects of drug addiction both on individuals and on their respective families. And while governments, peoples’ organizations, private groups, and other social support system are working round the clock to turn the tide, New Mexico’s drug rehab programs have been revamped and revitalized to keep up with the growing need for more responsive and equally effective drug rehabilitation programs.
For a drug treatment and rehab program to work, it must encompass the three fundamental stages of the addiction rehabilitation process.
Starting with detoxification, individuals are assisted as they go through the ordeal of having too manage their withdrawal symptoms. While some clinical manifestations are rather benign, quite a few others often suffer from severe to life threatening withdrawal symptoms. The severity of the clinical manifestation is directly proportional to the type, severity, and nature of the drug addiction. Some drugs or substances are naturally more dangerous than others because of their physiologic effects such as cardiac arrhythmias, seizures, heart failure, cerebrovascular accident, coma, and even death. That is why drug rehab programs must always start with an effective detoxification program to make sure that lives are not wasted.
The major addiction treatment process is at the core of the rehabilitation program. This entails two very significant processes that are interrelated. The first is the cognitive component where the individual is assisted in making careful consideration and reflection of his or her thought patterns. It is crucial to identify psychological triggers that may play a very crucial role in the individual’s use of addicting substances. These maladaptive thought patterns need to be realized and accepted as negative and hence, should be replaced with more constructive, adaptive, and positive thoughts.
The second phase of the addiction treatment is centered on helping the individual initiate changes in his or her behavior in conjunction with the change in thought patterns. The individual is taught a variety of techniques and strategies which he can use whenever he is faced with the same stimulus that may make him want to take drugs again. He practices these techniques the whole time he is at the facility until such time that all of these coping strategies and techniques are automatically integrated into his being. While cognitive and behavioral therapies will be used in such drug rehab programs, it is not uncommon to find complementary therapies such as experiential therapy, mindfulness training, and even brain wellness programs.
An effective drug rehab program must also take into account the continuity of care for the individual and his family long after completion of the program. This provides the best hope for staying addiction-free in the real world. This is accomplished by the existence of social support groups that provide continuing care for successful rehabilitees.
The drug scourge may be worsening but many people are still very hopeful in the effectiveness of drug rehab programs. It is their hope in this otherwise dark world of drug addiction.
