C.H. Hanson Observes 150 Anniversary, One of the Country\’s Oldest Manufacturers

“C.H. Hanson, founded in 1866, opened its factory at 44 S. Clark Street in Chicago, IL”
C.H. Hanson, one of the nation’s oldest manufacturers and a family-run company for five generations, is observing its 150th anniversary. The official celebration is scheduled for Aug. 19 at its Naperville, IL, headquarters.

The company manufactures and distributes more than 5000 products worldwide that are used in metalworking; abrasive finishing; work holding; industrial marking, maintenance and repair, fabricating and electrical safety, construction and contractor supply.

The company was founded in 1866 by Christian Henry Hanson, a Danish immigrant and stencil maker.  When Hanson arrived in the United States he was drafted into the Union army. He fought in several battles including Gettysburg where he was injured.  He was then taken to Fort Dearborn and released from duty. Deciding to stay in Chicago, he started a business at 44 S. Clark St., producing the same hand cut stencils he had made in Denmark.

Six years later the Great Chicago Fire destroyed almost all his work. Undeterred, Hanson rebuilt the company at 303 E. Erie. Needing additional space, the company moved to Franklin Park and in 2006 to its present location in Naperville.

“My great grandfather built the company on the principles of—faith, hard work and quality.  These core values continue to guide us today and have enabled us to grow and expand. Today our products are found in best in class retailers and distributed throughout the world and,” explains Andrew Hanson, vice president of marketing.

“Very few companies can boast of family ownership for 150 years,” Hanson points out. He attributes the company’s successful longevity to its ability to innovate both products and merchandising methods. “We have the ability to quickly respond to changing market needs with new products, new merchandising and new packaging – that is something that sets us apart from the competition,” he adds.

A few years ago Hanson acquired Palmgren Steel Products, a nearly century old company known for its machine vises, positioning tables and wide variety of other metal working tools. Most recently it added Dayton Hand Tools.

Phil Hanson serves as president and Craig Hanson is the CEO. A recognized market leader in stencils, tags, steel stamps, workholding and other metalworking machine tools and accessories, it still produces the stencils and tags that were first introduced in 1866.
