EU imports of plastic sacks and bags have been steadily on the rise; approximately 80% of current trade is between EU member states. Extra-EU imports, however, are also experiencing an upward trend, resulting in the steady growth of the share of foreign products in consumption. Vietnam has recently indicated a double-digit rate of growth in terms of the supply of plastic bags to the EU, thereby capturing a place in the top three suppliers, along with China and Malaysia.
Total EU imports of plastic sacks and bags have shown robust growth over the past 6 years, peaking at its highest level of 4,943 million EUR in 2015. Data concerning the EU trade with non-EU countries shows that the EU remains a net importer of plastic bags.
The U.K. (17%), Germany (17%), France (12%) and Netherlands (9%) were the largest plastic sacks and bags importing Member States, together comprising 55% of total EU imports. The U.K.’s share (-4 percentage points) illustrated a negative dynamic, while Germany’s (+3 percentage points), and the Netherlands’s (+2 percentage points) shares increased from 2007 to 2015.
Most of the trade value has been concentrated between the EU Member States over recent years, while extra-EU imports currently comprise about 18% of the total imports value. Extra EU imports amounted to approximately 1,730 million EUR in 2015, an increase of 6% against the previous year.
The share of extra-EU imports in the apparent consumption increased, reaching 16% in 2015, whereas, in the previous six years to date, it was completely stable (14%). The increasing supply of imported goods is significantly enhancing competition for European manufacturers. It is anticipated that this pressure will continue over the next few years, although the domestic supply’s current dominance is not set to diminish in the medium term.
China, Vietnam and Malaysia, are key countries in terms of the supply of plastic sacks and bags to the EU. Vietnam has shown a notable increase in its supply, expanding the country’s share in extra-EU imports from 4% in 2007, to 18% in 2015. Average annual growth over this period stood at +26.3%. China, with 30% of the extra-EU plastic bags imports in 2015, was down 7 percentage points over the same period, and Malaysia’s share also dropped to 12% in 2015.
