As an outstanding microbiologist in China, LIU Yan has accomplished great achievements in the microbiological field. Focusing on the field of microbiology, she is dedicated to research and always adopts a down-to-earth approach to look for laws and patterns in the microbiological world. The innovativeness of the “Research and Application of Structure-Activity Relationship of Novel Agarase from New Species”, a project presided over by LIU Yan and funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the highest-ranking natural science fund in China, lies in that it conducts research on the protein sequence-structure-function relationships, examines the various functional motifs of new agarase genes, makes cross comparison of the synergetic roles between these motifs, exchanges expressions, specifies the relevance between key sites and enzyme catalytic mechanisms, and reveals the operating mechanisms of agarase from the perspective of the various functional motifs and synergetic roles between them. The research findings of this Project have provided theoretical and technical support for expanding the wide application of agarase in China.

She has been a reviewer for international journals and SCI papers many times. Meanwhile, she is also a main author of Cell Culture Engineering, a national planned textbook in China.
