According to the National Cancer Institute, an estimated 1,685,210 new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in the United States in 2016. But there is encouraging news as well: the number of people living beyond a cancer diagnosis reached nearly 14.5 million in 2014. By 2024, that number is expected to rise to almost 19 million.
Not only is Margaret Barnhart a part of that very special group, but she is giving a voice to those in that group as well. “We live life to the fullest when we are unafraid to tell others about what is happening in our lives,” Barnhart says. “They learn from what we share.”
That belief has inspired Barnhart to share more of her own story as well as the stories of five other cancer patients. Their experiences are captured in the pages of Barnhart’s second book, “Personal Encounters with Cancer.” The book recently achieved bestseller status by hitting the number one spot in three categories on Amazon.com: Breast Cancer, Lung Cancer, and Prostate Health. These results were verified by Amazon on August 22, 2016.
“My goal in bringing these stories to light is to give the reader an inside look at cancer from different perspectives. No two experiences are the same. No two people with the same diagnosis are the same. A treatment for one may not work for another,” Barnhart explains. “Reading this book will expose you to an understanding that hope exists.”
Dr. Carl H. Smith, who actively distributes Barnhart’s writings during clinical visits to cancer patients and their care providers, agrees. “Margaret’s works are pertinent, holistically-relative and caring. The two sides of the author – her personal walk through the cancer process and her Biblical relevance – has made her a tender-loving, caring survivor, counselor, and mentor.”
Barnhart has a message of hope that resonates with her audience – both in print, and in person. A spokesperson for Encanterra Writing Club says, “We were very fortunate to discover Margaret. We wanted to find an author who would share their writing with us. She was a perfect fit and when the Book Club and Bible Study groups heard she was coming, they wanted to be included. The audience had different interests, but she kept all engrossed. She read portions of Journey Unknown – which are so well written they inspire, inform and give hope.”
“It seems that every day I hear of someone receiving a diagnosis of cancer,” Barnhart says. “Life is more meaningful when we share not only the physical issues, but also the emotional and spiritual.”
Barnhart is the 2014 Winner of “Words of Inspiration” from American Breast Care competition. Her previous publication, Journey Unknown: Focusing on the Emotional Aspects of Cancer, Mastectomy and Chemotherapy, is also a best-selling book.
