Enumclaw, WA – Out of a personal search for a deeper connection with the Lord, Dr. Wes Johnson encountered the ancient spiritual discipline of “breath prayer”—biblically-centered reflective prayer that uses Scripture in prayer. Dr. Johnson says the method “opened up a deeper level of communion with God” for him personally. Paired with breath prayer is lectio divina, a way to read Scripture with an increasing awareness of the presence of God. Dr. Johnson says, “Its goal is to open ourselves to the presence of the Lord through the written text of Scripture. Our mission is to pray our consent to God’s intent as he expressed it through his Spirit in the words of the Bible.”
The Everett, WA area pastor shares his discoveries in He Wakens Me: How to Pray When You don’t Know What to Pray (Redemption Press). In it he provides clear instruction for breath prayer and lectio divina, biblical support of the value of this type of prayer, and the personal experiences of those who practice it.
Dr. Johnson, the executive director of the Awakenings Prayer Institute, says, “Lectio divina is about breathing in the living Word as the Spirit of God breathes it out. We discover that God’s Word lives and acts within us. He informs us of his divine intent, corrects us in our rebellion, and trains us to think, feel, and act for God’s good purpose.”
He says, “This book will provide seekers with ways to cling to the Father, Son, and Spirit, to rest in God’s presence and be renewed to the awareness of the Lord’s good purpose.”
