When there is an addiction, drug or alcohol detox is often the only safe, clinical solution.  Addiction is considered to be a disease it can pose negative and serious consequences on an individual’s life, well-being, and physical health. There are as many forms of addiction as there are people. Addiction can take the form of anything that a person cannot cease on their own accord. When acute detox becomes the only alternative in PA, patients rely on trusted and effective treatments in a controlled and safe environment.

However, the one thing that any addiction has in common with another is there are always withdrawal risks involved. Not all addictions start out with the intention of becoming an addiction though. Some start out by taking a prescription drug that gets out of control. Some, simply want to experiment and the experimentation spirals out of control. Addiction has health, financial, and social consequences—none of which are positive. Then, there are the challenges that an addicted loved one’s family faces. As such, families are quite often torn apart by addictions that are out of control.

When Acute Drug Detox Becomes Necessary

It is always a positive and brave thing when an individual realizes they need clinical help to overcome an addiction. Acute detox is the form of drug or alcohol treatment that is offered to help wean an individual off their drug or alcohol. The detox process is the first act of helping the individual rid their body of harmful chemicals. This has to happen before an individual can be fully open and benefit from rehab. Detox, depending on the drug and person’s state of health, can take from three days to weeks or longer.

Medication-supported detox is administered to help patients navigate a safe withdrawal. While withdrawal may not be as challenging for some, it can cause harsh symptoms which include sweating, nausea, vomiting, cramps, hallucinations, rapid heartbeats, and more for many others. As such, self-detox is never recommended for the obvious reasons—it can cause death.

The intake process and assessment, thorough, seeks to uncover a person’s past drug abuse history, medical records, and a revelation of their family’s history of drug abuse if relevant. This allows doctors to design an acute drug treatment plan that helps support patients through a challenging detox withdrawal.

An outpatient program is recommended for patients whose addiction is under relative control. Outpatient programs are just as effective as inpatient programs. However, they are less intense. Patients are allowed to return home at the end of each rehab day. Medications are administered and counseling and therapies are just as available and accessible.
There are different programs for individuals, and acute detox is one of many modes of treatment. Some patients, thought detox medications, may become dependent on medications other than those they were addicted to. Not all people will experience this, but an effective detox center will take this under consideration.

One of the key components to the acute detox program is that individuals are privy to group therapy, individual and family relationship counseling, assertive training, relapse prevention education, stress management education, and more as part of their program. The goal is to give patients all the tools and support needed to live a life of sobriety.
