When a person falls prey to an addiction, there are a lot of questions that will follow. They may ask themselves if they really need addiction rehab.

They may not even think they have a serious substance abuse problem to begin with. The truth is if they are having problems functioning on a daily basis, there is an addiction problem that needs addressing. It is a good thing when an addicted individual garnishes the motivation and willingness to seek clinical help. Note the following reality check of what to expect from Colorado detox treatments.

Upon Entry, What Happens at a Detox Facility?

The very first step for patients is to complete an intake assessment. The intake specialist  will take considerable time conversing with the patient to learn about their substance abuse habit and arrange to collect relevant medical documents. There will be considerable paperwork to fill out. Patients should be totally honest when doing so. It allows clinicians to design a precise plan for them to detox and get well.

The patient is instructed what to bring to rehab, and what not to bring. For inpatient treatments, the patient checks in and gets ready for detox. Examinations will be given to assess the patient’s state of health and to find any co-occurring disorders. These can be treated in concurrence with their addiction. The goal is so make sure that nothing is overlooked that will cause the patient to relapse once rehab has been completed. Medications are administered along with counseling and therapies that can help the individual make the connection between thought, action, and behavior.

Will Detox Be Painful?

If the patient is awake and not in a rapid detox program, detox can be a painful process. Their body is going through withdrawal stages that can cause a great deal of discomfort depending on their health and addicted drug. That being said, detox is designed to be as painless as possible. A patient may be given the same drug of addiction, or an alternative drug, to help them detox in the safest possible way. Detox is almost made as painless as possible as a result of the excellent work performed by psychiatrists, doctors, nurses, technicians, and other rehab facility staff members.

How Long Will Detox Last?

Detox can last for several days or several weeks. It depends on the drug, the patient’s health, and how long they were addicted. It also depends on the patient’s willingness to see their program through from beginning to end. Patients should know that detox is not the complete treatment. While detox can help remove harmful chemicals from the body, rehab and follow-up/aftercare are additional programs to help patients find the courage and strength to remain sober. Rehab offers behavioral therapies, counseling, and other alternative treatments to help patients get back on the road to recovery.

Recovering patients are always encouraged to join groups like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), or Narcotics Anonymous (NA). There is no cost to join. The only requirement is that a recovering addict have a strong desire to remain sober.
