Millions of people suffer from addictions brought on by drug and alcohol abuse.

For some, there is the fortunate act of seeking and finding clinical help. For others, the not-so-lucky ones, there is no help. They either detox alone or disappear off the face of the earth. Then, there are those who know they need help, can receive help, but refuse to seek it out. In this country, more than 23 million people, at any given time, can lay claim to being an addict.

Those Who Make it to Rehab Benefit

The largest group of those who make it to rehab are people addicted to alcohol. Quite a large number of drug abusers also check in. Surprisingly, there is a large number of those addicted to both drugs and alcohol. The sad reality is that most of the people who need rehab never receive it. Many of these people die from drug or alcohol-related causes. In fact, as many as 100 people may die each day in the country from overdoses, or from injuries sustained while on drugs or under the influence of alcohol.

Not everyone who does not make it to rehab plans it that way. There may be millions of people who have fallen off the grid with good intent. These are folks that will never get the clinical help they need to get well.

Understanding Detox

Once a patient is assessed, they are likely ready for detox. Detox can be physically and mentally challenging for many. This is why it is never recommended to detox alone. Detox, supervised, can remove toxins from the body. However, it is also a mental and spiritual adjustment people must make to get well. Otherwise, rehab will offer little value for the recovering addict. Detox provides the needed chemicals to help a patient detox with as little discomfort as possible. The length of time spent in detox depends on the individual’s severity of addiction, their overall health, and their ability to follow through on everything offered by their program.

If their program is inpatient treatment, they are administered to on a 24-hour basis as needed. Their program can last anywhere from a week to several months. Generally, the longer a patient remains in rehab, the greater the likelihood they will realize long-term sobriety. This is what every rehab programs tries to offer patients.

Outpatient programs, just as effective in treatments, offers patients a bit more flexibility in being able to return home at the end of their rehab day. Patients, at this state of rehab, will have shown the ability to adhere to their programs and doctor orders to the letter. Patients in the outpatient program may be tested periodically to ensure they are remaining drug or alcohol free.

Remember if you or a loved one is suffering from drug or alcohol abuse, the most important step is always the first one taken—to seek and find clinical help.
