Motown The Musical is the story about a young, Berry Gordy, founder of Motown Records. It starts with Gordy refusing to attend Motown’s 25th anniversary celebration, because of the gripe he has with some of his label’s biggest stars. While he contemplates not attending the celebration Berry reminisces about his past life and starting his record company.

He reflects on his humble beginnings in a modest home dubbed “Hitsville, U.S.A.”. Berry recalls trying to start a career as a boxing professional, before borrowing money from his family to start his own record label in the late 1950’s. He remembers writing hits for Jackie Wilson, before getting his big break. During the flash backs multiple acts hit the stage portraying influential artists of Motown’s early days.

Motown has managed the careers of some of the most elite artists in the music industry including, but not limited to, The Jackson 5, Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, Four Tops, Gladys Night & The Pips, Stevie Wonder, Rick James, Smokey Robinson, Lionel Richie, The Spinners, and so many more.

This musical is an upbeat spectacular and filled with thrills. Get ready to have a good time. Motown will have you out of your seat dancing and singing throughout the entire show. It immediately starts off with singing, dancing and audience interaction. There are over 50 song renditions performed and don’t be surprised if you know every song, as these are some of the most popular songs ever. It’s no doubt this two and half hour show will keep you entertained.

It’s undeniable that Motown had (and still has) a major impact on the music industry. Motown’s inept ability to produce hit after hit for so many years, has made it a monumental icon. It started in Detroit and borrowed its name from the city’s moniker, Motor City. Motown’s recorded history will never be forgotten and this musical proves just that!
