RICHMOND, VA – 10/14/2016 (PRESS RELEASE JET) — Leading the charge into Virginia’s Opera Season, Capitol Opera Richmond (COR), is now on its final leg of their most ambitious, full-length production of Le Opera Noli Me Tangere.

Under COR’s mission to make opera affordable & interesting to the people of Richmond, they’ve partnered with the Mid Atlantic Foundation for Asian Artists (MAFFAA) who is taking along the original visionaries of the project – KGB Productions in presenting this rare masterpiece by Felipe de Leon in its final weekend performance from October 13 through October 16, 2016 at the historic Henrico Theater.

This modern day opera has created a dramatic storyline of unrequited love, betrayal and revenge.  Under the capable hands of its artistic director PJ Freebourn, he was able to bring a unique interpretation of this grand opus with soaring arias and accompanied by beautiful, melodious music, capturing the entire plot laden with many new twists and turns, including a mad scene – a first in opera – a crocodile attack!

A first of its kind to introduce Tagalog as a lyric language w/ English supertitles, the show’s musical director – Anthony Smith rose up to bring to the stage this new expression of the vocal arts, with the unification of Western classical traditions, and the emergence of a modern Filipino opera.

The Producers of the show, faces the challenge on how to how to raise the bar in artistic excellence on this rare masterpiece based from the novel written in 1887 by Dr Jose Rizal that was originally inspired by Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin. The lessons learned from both novels is to find a common ground in which it can empower an individual to affect positive change in the world. Thus, the inspiration of Uncle Tom’s Cabin combined with the compelling story of Noli Me Tangere, moves us all to rediscover our complicated past and reconnect that period of our shared history that still resonates in the present day

Furthermore, MAFFAA & KGB Production’s coming to Virginia, is also in observance of October as the Filipino American History Month. We believe that we have a chance to give reverence to the 100 years of the passage of the bill by Virginia Congressman William Atkins Jones who wrote the Philippine Autonomy Act, more popularly known as the Jones Act in 1916 that established the Philippines as the first democratic country in Asia

This grand masterpiece will once again come alive in a new American production at the historic Henrico Theater with its final leg of performance from October 13 at 7:00 pm, through October 15 at 7:00 pm & October 16, 2016 for a matinee performance at 3:00 pm. A free performance was set for students & veterans on October 13 at 7:00 pm, followed by regular performances on October 14 – 15 at 7:00 pm, ending on October 16 for a 3:00 pm matinee performance
