In the past 30 years, childhood obesity has grown to epidemic proportions, with almost 18% of American children aged 6-11 currently falling into the obese classification.  This is largely because of the enormous amount of electronic media that contributes to a sedentary lifestyle.  However, there are some valiant projects which are trying to turn the tide on childhood obesity including Operation Hula Hoop.

Operation Hula Hoop helps young children adopt an active lifestyle by putting a copy of the adorable and educational book “The Caterpillar and the Hula Hoop” in their hands. “The Caterpillar and the Hula Hoop” is a children’s storybook about Jacob the Caterpillar who embarks on a personal journey of discovery and self-empowerment.  As Jacob overcomes challenges, discovers new things in the world and eventually achieves his dream of using a hula hoop, young readers will enjoy the colorful, captivating illustrations and be inspired to also exercise.  “The Caterpillar and the Hula Hoop” provides a powerful message about being healthy and confident while also teaching skills like numerical recognition.

“The Caterpillar and the Hula Hoop” is the first in what will be a series created by the husband and wife team  of Kym and Stan Festa, whose pen name is Festa Pfannkuch. After generating an enormously positive response from young readers and their parents with this first story, Festa Pfannkuch are hard at work on a new story about Jacob the Caterpillar. Like “The Caterpillar and the Hula Hoop”, the sequel will by magnificently illustrated by Kym Festa.

Creating a visual masterpiece with a compelling story and message takes a considerable investment.  Kym and Stan are inviting you to join them in Operation Hula Hoop as they encourage kids to leave behind their video screens and explore the wider world.  They have sponsored a fundraising campaign on Indiegogo to raise the $15,000 to help pay for the costs of cover design, printing, shipping, packaging and marketing for “The Caterpillar and the Hula Hoop”.

In return for your generous support, you may receive valuable perks including hardcover editions, signed books, T-shirts, posters, bookmarks, or a virtual book reading.
